AI Interaction Design Engineer

About the role

The gap between a static mockup and a working AI-powered interface is where most design tools fall apart. Figma tells you what it looks like; nothing tells you how it behaves when the LLM response is 3 seconds late, or when the AI output is wrong, or when the user asks for something outside the model's capability range. You'll build the interaction layer of our design platform — the tools that let designers prototype, simulate, and validate AI-powered UI patterns without writing backend code. Think: a component library of AI states (loading, streaming, error, confidence-low), a simulation engine that injects latency and failure scenarios into prototypes, and a behavior specification format that devs can implement directly from the design file. We have 4,200 product designers using our platform, 60% of whom are now building AI-powered features for the first time. Your work will shape how they think about AI interaction patterns before a single line of production code is written.

Responsibilities

  • Build an interaction component library covering AI-specific UI states and patterns
  • Design a simulation engine that injects latency, errors, and edge cases into prototypes
  • Create a behavior specification format bridging design to engineering handoff
  • Collaborate with product designers as a technical advisor on AI interaction patterns
  • Build documentation and interactive guides for the component library
  • Drive adoption through internal demos and design system integrations

Requirements

  • 5+ years in frontend or design engineering with UX systems experience
  • Experience building design system components or UI libraries
  • Familiarity with LLM APIs and streaming response patterns
  • Strong API design skills — you'll build the interaction simulation engine
  • Ability to communicate technical constraints to non-technical designers
