AI Inventory Shrinkage Detection Engineer

About the role

You'll be the third data engineer on a tight-knit team of six, working directly with the head of retail analytics. Halvex Data serves grocery chains and fast-moving consumer goods retailers, and one of the thorniest problems we solve is inventory shrinkage — the gap between what should be on shelf and what's actually there, caused by theft, spoilage, mislabeling, or receiving errors. In this role, you'll start by getting deeply familiar with our data pipelines and existing anomaly detection baselines. Then you'll develop more precise detection models using POS data, inventory logs, and receiving records. The output feeds directly into store operations dashboards used by store managers and loss prevention teams. This is a great first or second role for someone coming from a retail or FMCG analytics background who wants to build more rigorous ML skills. We invest in junior talent — expect a clear learning path and regular 1-on-1 coaching from a senior analyst.

Responsibilities

  • Build anomaly detection models for inventory shrinkage across product categories
  • Analyze POS, inventory, and receiving data to identify discrepancy patterns
  • Own Tableau dashboards surfacing shrinkage alerts to store operations teams
  • Document data quality issues and work with data engineering to resolve them
  • Participate in weekly model review calls with loss prevention leads

Requirements

  • 1+ year experience with data analysis or ML
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Comfortable working with messy retail datasets
  • Familiarity with Tableau or similar BI tool
  • Retail, CPG, or supply chain background is a plus
