About the role

We've built one of the largest enterprise knowledge graphs in the legal sector — 14 million nodes, 89 million edges, covering case law, statutes, and regulatory filings across 23 jurisdictions. What we haven't cracked yet is making it searchable in natural language without losing precision. Your job is to build the bridge between our structured graph and the messy questions lawyers actually ask. Think hybrid retrieval: combining graph traversals with vector similarity, then ranking results using domain-specific relevance signals. The current keyword search gets about 62% precision — we need 85%+ to replace the manual research workflow. You'll work closely with our legal domain experts who understand what matters in a search result and our backend team who maintains the graph infrastructure. Two engineers started this project six months ago; you'll be the third, taking ownership of the retrieval and ranking layers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement hybrid retrieval combining graph queries and vector search
  • Build ranking models using legal-domain relevance signals
  • Develop evaluation frameworks to measure search precision and recall
  • Create APIs that expose knowledge discovery to our SaaS product
  • Analyze query logs to identify patterns and improve retrieval quality
  • Collaborate with domain experts to define relevance ground truth

Requirements

  • 3+ years working with knowledge graphs, search systems, or NLP pipelines
  • Experience with RAG architectures and vector databases
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation
  • Familiarity with LangChain or similar orchestration frameworks
  • Understanding of information retrieval metrics and evaluation methods
