About the role

Last-mile delivery is where logistics companies lose money. The routes look optimal on paper but fall apart when a driver can't find parking, a customer isn't home, traffic patterns shift by 20 minutes, or a delivery window conflicts with a building's freight elevator schedule. Real-world constraints don't fit neatly into a traveling salesman formulation. Our optimization engine handles 340,000 deliveries per day across 14 metro areas. We combine classical optimization with learned models that predict real-world complications — parking availability, customer presence probability, time-of-day traffic adjustments — and bake those predictions into the routing decisions. The result: 12% fewer failed deliveries and 8% lower fuel costs compared to conventional routing software. You'll own the prediction models that feed into the optimizer. When a prediction is wrong, a driver wastes 15 minutes. When it's right, the route flows like it was planned by someone who drives it every day. The logistics team will give you all the ground-truth data you need; your job is turning historical patterns into accurate real-time predictions.

Responsibilities

  • Build prediction models for parking availability, customer presence, and delivery time
  • Integrate learned predictions into the route optimization engine
  • Design evaluation frameworks comparing predicted vs actual delivery outcomes
  • Optimize model inference latency for real-time route adjustments
  • Analyze failed deliveries to identify prediction improvement opportunities
  • Collaborate with operations teams to validate model assumptions

Requirements

  • 5+ years in ML engineering with optimization or operations research experience
  • Experience with geospatial data and location-based predictions
  • Strong Python, PyTorch, and SQL skills
  • Understanding of combinatorial optimization and constraint satisfaction
  • Track record of deploying models that improve operational metrics
