About the role

E-discovery in litigation generates millions of documents that lawyers must review for relevance and privilege. At $50 per attorney hour, a single case can burn $2M in document review alone. Our platform uses NLP to prioritize, classify, and summarize discovery documents — cutting review time by 65% while maintaining the defensibility standards courts require. We need a senior engineer to own the classification and prioritization pipeline. The current system handles straightforward keyword-based relevance well, but struggles with nuanced legal concepts: documents that are responsive not because they mention a keyword, but because they describe a pattern of behavior relevant to the claims. You'll build models that understand legal context, not just legal vocabulary. The legal AI team is six engineers. You'll work alongside two legal consultants who define what "relevant" means for each matter type, and a data team that manages the annotation pipeline producing 20,000 labeled documents per week. Every model change gets validated against attorney review decisions before deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the document classification and prioritization pipeline for e-discovery
  • Build NLP models that capture nuanced legal relevance beyond keyword matching
  • Design evaluation frameworks validated against attorney review decisions
  • Implement active learning to reduce annotation requirements per new matter
  • Ensure classification defensibility for courtroom challenges
  • Collaborate with legal consultants to encode domain expertise into model design

Requirements

  • 6+ years in NLP engineering with production classification systems
  • Experience with document-level classification at scale (millions of documents)
  • Strong Python skills with LangChain or similar orchestration frameworks
  • Understanding of precision-recall trade-offs in high-stakes domains
  • Experience in legal tech, compliance, or regulated industries preferred
