AI Legislative Bill Summarization Engineer

About the role

We believe AI should make government more legible to the people it governs, not just to lobbyists who can afford to hire analysts. Our tools are already used by nonprofits and advocacy groups tracking state-level legislation. What we have today is a working pipeline that ingests bill text from all 50 states, but the summaries our current heuristics produce are too generic to be useful for tracking specific policy areas. What's missing is a summarization system that understands legislative structure well enough to flag amendments, funding changes, and sunset clauses. Your role is to build and own that summarization layer end to end, working closely with our policy research team who will review outputs before they reach subscribers.

Responsibilities

  • Design a summarization pipeline for legislative bill text
  • Fine-tune models to detect amendments and funding changes
  • Work with policy researchers to validate summary accuracy
  • Own the summarization service in production
  • Build evaluation sets covering multiple state legislatures

Requirements

  • 5+ years building NLP systems for long-form documents
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation
  • Comfortable working on-site with the policy research team
  • Interest in civic tech or government transparency
