About the role

Our platform indexes 50 million academic papers, and researchers want more than search — they want AI-generated literature reviews. Given a research question, our system should identify the 50 most relevant papers, synthesize their findings, identify consensus and disagreements, and present a structured review with proper citations. This freelance engagement focuses on the synthesis pipeline: given retrieved papers, how do you generate a literature review that's accurate, comprehensive, well-structured, and properly cited? The retrieval layer already works. The generation quality is where we need help. Engagements are 6-week blocks with clear deliverables. You'll design the generation architecture, implement it, evaluate output quality against expert-written reviews, and iterate until the system meets academic standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design the literature review generation pipeline from retrieved papers
  • Implement multi-document synthesis with accurate citation tracking
  • Build evaluation frameworks comparing AI reviews against expert-written reviews
  • Optimize generation for accuracy, coverage, and structural quality
  • Deliver documented, production-ready code in 6-week engagement blocks

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP with multi-document summarization experience
  • Hands-on LlamaIndex and LangChain experience
  • Experience with RAG systems for knowledge synthesis
  • Understanding of academic writing conventions and citation standards
  • Ability to evaluate text quality for factual accuracy and completeness
