About the role

Medical coding translates clinical encounters into billing codes — ICD-10 for diagnoses, CPT for procedures, HCPCS for supplies. Hospitals employ armies of certified coders who read clinical notes and assign codes. Our AI reads the notes and suggests codes, reducing coder workload by 60% while catching coding errors that cause claim denials. You'll lead the coding automation engine: clinical NLP that extracts diagnoses and procedures from physician notes, mapping algorithms that select the most specific applicable codes, and the confidence scoring system that determines which AI suggestions are reliable enough to auto-apply versus requiring human review. Medical coding errors have direct financial consequences — undercoding leaves revenue on the table, overcoding triggers audits and penalties. The AI needs to be accurate, conservative, and transparent about its reasoning. Every code suggestion must be traceable to specific evidence in the clinical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of clinical NLP for diagnosis and procedure extraction
  • Build mapping algorithms selecting the most specific applicable billing codes
  • Design confidence scoring determining auto-apply vs. human review thresholds
  • Ensure code suggestions are traceable to specific clinical documentation evidence
  • Monitor coding accuracy and track claim denial rates from AI-suggested codes

Requirements

  • 5+ years in clinical NLP or healthcare information extraction
  • Strong PyTorch and Hugging Face skills for medical text understanding
  • Understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and medical coding workflows
  • Experience with healthcare compliance and documentation standards
  • Track record leading ML projects in regulated healthcare environments
