About the role

A typical mortgage application involves 150+ pages of documents: pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, property appraisals, title reports, and insurance declarations. Loan officers manually verify data across these documents, checking that the income on the pay stub matches the tax return matches the bank deposits. Our platform automates this cross-document verification. You'll work on the extraction pipeline that pulls structured data from mortgage documents. The challenge isn't OCR — it's understanding document structure. A pay stub from ADP looks nothing like one from Gusto, and a bank statement from Chase has a completely different layout than one from a credit union. You'll build extractors that handle this format diversity using a combination of template matching, learned layout analysis, and LLM-based field extraction. This is a junior role with clear growth potential. Your senior teammate has built extractors for 40 document formats; you'll learn the methodology and start building your own within your first month. We process 8,000 mortgage applications per month, so your code runs against real documents immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Build document extractors for new mortgage document formats
  • Implement cross-document data verification logic
  • Handle edge cases: handwritten entries, stamps, multi-page tables
  • Write accuracy tests against annotated document samples
  • Maintain extractor performance as document formats evolve
  • Document extraction patterns and format-specific handling rules

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of OCR or document processing concepts
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and SQL databases
  • Attention to detail for accurate data extraction
  • Interest in fintech or document automation
