About the role

We're building AI tools for music producers — not to replace them, but to accelerate their creative process. Our platform generates drum patterns, chord progressions, and melody suggestions that match a producer's style and the energy of what they're building. Think autocomplete for music. This freelance role focuses on the generation models: training transformer-based architectures on MIDI data, designing the conditioning system that lets producers control style and energy, and building the evaluation pipeline that measures musical quality (which is far more subjective than text quality). Engagements are scoped in 8-week blocks. You'll work with our audio team on requirements and our lead ML engineer on architecture decisions. If you know both deep learning and music theory, you're a rare combination we're looking for.

Responsibilities

  • Train transformer-based models on MIDI data for music generation
  • Design conditioning systems for style and energy control
  • Build evaluation pipelines for generated music quality assessment
  • Experiment with different architectures for pattern and melody generation
  • Deliver documented models and training procedures in 8-week blocks

Requirements

  • 3+ years in ML with generative model experience
  • Strong PyTorch skills for sequence modeling
  • Understanding of music theory fundamentals (keys, scales, rhythm)
  • Experience with audio or MIDI data processing
  • Ability to work independently on scoped deliverables
