AI NPC Dialogue Generation Developer

About the role

Every NPC in every game ever made says the same 12 lines. Players memorize them, stop listening, and the world stops feeling alive. We're replacing the static dialogue tree with a runtime dialogue generation system that produces contextually appropriate, character-consistent responses in under 200ms — fast enough to feel like a real conversation. You'll own the dialogue generation pipeline: the character state representation that tracks what each NPC knows, the prompt construction layer that encodes personality and narrative context, the LLM integration with latency constraints that matter on console hardware, and the safety filter that keeps responses on-brand and lore-consistent. The system needs to work offline on PS5/Xbox hardware, which means fine-tuned smaller models, not API calls. We have three game studio partners in active integration. The first title ships in 18 months. The dialogue system needs to support 400 unique NPCs with distinct personalities, knowledge states, and speech patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Design the character state representation for NPC knowledge and personality
  • Build the prompt construction layer encoding character context for LLM inference
  • Optimize dialogue generation for sub-200ms latency on console hardware
  • Implement lore-consistency filtering and safety layers
  • Create tools for game writers to author character parameters without coding
  • Integrate with game studio partners' asset pipelines and testing frameworks

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP engineering with LLM integration experience
  • Experience with prompt engineering and LLM fine-tuning
  • Understanding of real-time system constraints and on-device inference
  • Strong Python skills; game development background is a bonus
  • Ability to collaborate with both ML engineers and creative game writers
