AI Paint Defect Classification Engineer

Olivia Wang

Full-time · Job · Detroit

About the role

Automotive paint defects are classified into dozens of specific types — cratering, orange peel, runs, sags, fisheyes, dirt nibs, solvent pop, delamination — and the classification matters because each type has a different root cause, a different remediation, and a different cost impact. A human quality inspector classifying these defects correctly needs years of training and consistent lighting. An automated vision system needs a model trained on thousands of labeled examples across paint colors, textures, and defect severity levels. We serve 12 automotive and industrial coating clients with vision-based quality inspection systems. Paint defect classification is a new product vertical: we've built the inspection pipeline for structural defects; now we're extending it to surface coating quality. Your models will run on camera systems installed above paint booths and post-paint inspection stations, classifying defects in real time and triggering the appropriate rework routing. You'll design and train the paint defect classification model: curating training data with quality engineers, handling the class imbalance problem (rare defects matter most but have fewest examples), validating accuracy against expert inspector classifications, and optimizing for the 100ms inference budget on line hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Design paint defect classification models covering the full taxonomy of automotive coating defects
  • Curate training data with quality engineers ensuring balanced coverage across defect types and severities
  • Implement class imbalance handling for rare but high-consequence defect categories
  • Validate model accuracy against expert inspector classifications as ground truth
  • Optimize inference to meet 100ms latency budget on production line hardware
  • Build defect severity scoring enabling differentiated rework routing decisions

Requirements

  • 3+ years in computer vision engineering with industrial inspection or manufacturing experience
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills with image classification model development
  • Experience with class imbalance techniques and fine-grained visual classification
  • Familiarity with automotive or industrial coating defect types preferred
  • Ability to collaborate with domain expert quality engineers on taxonomy and validation

Benefits

  • Fully remote with quarterly visits to manufacturing client inspection lines
  • Health and dental insurance
  • $2,500 annual professional development budget
  • 401(k) with match
  • Equity options
