About the role

A thorough prior art search for a software patent application takes a patent attorney 6-15 hours and costs clients $3,000-$8,000. Our platform reduces that to 45 minutes and $400 by automating the retrieval of technically similar prior art from 120 million patent documents and 400 million scientific papers. The bottleneck is semantic relevance: retrieving documents that are technically similar without using the same terminology as the claims. You'll improve the retrieval and ranking layer that makes semantic similarity work for patent analysis. The challenge is domain-specific: patent language evolves to avoid citing prior art, inventors use novel terminology intentionally, and technical similarity doesn't always map to lexical similarity. You'll build specialized embeddings, fine-tune retrieval models on patent data, and develop re-ranking logic that incorporates claim structure analysis. The engineering team is six people. This role owns the search and retrieval pipeline — roughly 40% of the technical stack. You'll work closely with two patent attorneys on staff who provide ground truth feedback on search quality.

Fully remote.
