AI Patient Record Deidentification Developer

About the role

Healthcare organizations need to share patient data for research, but HIPAA requires removing 18 categories of protected health information first. Manual deidentification is slow, expensive, and error-prone — a missed phone number or date of birth in a 50-page clinical note can result in a six-figure fine. Our NLP system detects and redacts PHI automatically, processing 10,000 clinical notes per day. The detection models handle standard PHI well — names, dates, SSNs, phone numbers — but struggle with contextual identifiers: "the patient's daughter who works at the school on Oak Street" contains enough information to reidentify someone in a small town, even though no single field triggers a standard PHI pattern. You'll improve detection of these contextual identifiers while keeping false positive rates low enough that the redacted notes remain useful for research. The health informatics team is four engineers. You'll start with the NER component that detects PHI entities, working under a senior engineer who handles the redaction and output formatting layers. HIPAA Safe Harbor compliance isn't optional — every improvement must be validated against certified test datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Improve PHI detection for contextual and indirect identifiers
  • Reduce false positive rates while maintaining HIPAA Safe Harbor compliance
  • Build evaluation pipelines against certified deidentification test datasets
  • Handle diverse clinical note formats: narratives, templates, structured forms
  • Write tests for edge cases and regression scenarios
  • Maintain documentation for compliance audit purposes

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development with NLP or text processing
  • Basic understanding of named entity recognition concepts
  • Interest in healthcare data and privacy regulations
  • Attention to detail for compliance-critical applications
  • Familiarity with Hugging Face transformers is a plus
