AI Payment Routing Optimization Developer

About the role

Every payment transaction has multiple possible paths — different acquiring banks, payment networks, and processing endpoints — and each path has different costs, success rates, and latency characteristics. Routing a $50 subscription renewal through the cheapest path might save $0.03 per transaction. Across 200 million transactions per month, that's $6M in annual savings for our merchant clients. The routing optimization combines predictive models (which path will succeed for this specific card, amount, and merchant?) with real-time optimization (given current network congestion and issuer behavior, which path is fastest?). You'll build both: the offline models that learn path performance patterns and the online system that makes routing decisions in under 50ms per transaction. The payments intelligence team is six engineers. You'll be the senior ML engineer defining the model architecture and feature strategy, working alongside a payments domain expert who understands the regulatory and network constraints that limit which routes are actually available for each transaction.

Responsibilities

  • Build predictive models for payment path success rate and latency
  • Design real-time routing optimization within 50ms decision windows
  • Engineer features from transaction history, card attributes, and network signals
  • Measure routing optimization impact against A/B test holdout groups
  • Handle routing constraints from regulations and network rules
  • Set technical direction for the payments ML roadmap

Requirements

  • 6+ years in ML with payment processing or fintech experience
  • Experience with real-time prediction serving at high transaction volumes
  • Strong understanding of multi-armed bandits or online optimization
  • Python, PyTorch, and SQL skills for model development
  • Knowledge of payment networks, acquiring, and transaction routing
