About the role

Autocomplete is the most underappreciated search feature. A great autocomplete saves users 4 keystrokes per query on average — which sounds trivial until you multiply it by 12 million daily queries. More importantly, good suggestions guide users toward queries the search engine can actually answer well, improving both user satisfaction and search success rate. Our autocomplete system goes beyond popularity-based suggestions. It personalizes completions based on the user's role, recent queries, and the documents they have access to. An engineer searching "deploy" should see "deployment pipeline status" while a marketing manager should see "deployment campaign metrics." You'll build the personalization layer that makes these context-aware suggestions. The search experience team is four engineers. You'll own autocomplete personalization, working with the ranking engineer who handles the main search results and the frontend developer who manages the suggestion UI. Every change gets measured by suggestion acceptance rate and downstream search success.

Responsibilities

  • Build personalized autocomplete using user role, query history, and document access
  • Design features capturing context for role-aware suggestion ranking
  • Implement low-latency suggestion serving at sub-50ms response time
  • Measure suggestion quality through acceptance rate and search success metrics
  • Handle cold-start personalization for new users
  • A/B test personalization strategies against popularity-based baselines

Requirements

  • 3+ years in search, NLP, or recommendation systems
  • Experience with autocomplete, query suggestion, or type-ahead systems
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills for model development
  • Understanding of latency optimization for interactive features
  • Proficiency in SQL for behavioral data analysis
