About the role

Our search team keeps losing users who phrase a query slightly differently than our index expects. A user searching for "cheap flights next week" and one searching for "affordable air travel soon" should hit the same results, but right now they often don't. You'll build a paraphrase generation pipeline that expands a single query into semantically equivalent variants, feeding those variants into retrieval so search recall improves without users needing to guess the exact phrasing our system prefers. This is a junior role with real ownership: you'll work closely with our senior NLP architect, who'll pair with you weekly, but the pipeline itself will be yours to build and iterate on.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Build a query paraphrase generation pipeline using transformer-based models
  • Feed generated paraphrases into the retrieval layer to improve recall
  • Evaluate paraphrase quality for semantic equivalence, not just surface variation
  • Pair weekly with the senior NLP architect on pipeline design
  • Track recall improvement across query reformulation test sets

Requirements

  • Foundational experience with NLP pipelines in Python
  • Familiarity with Hugging Face models for text generation or classification
  • Comfortable working with SQL and pandas for data prep
  • Eager to learn retrieval and ranking concepts on the job
