AI Receipt Data Extraction Developer

About the role

Our document processing platform handles 2 million receipts per month for expense management companies. The OCR layer works well for standard printed receipts, but handwritten notes, faded thermal prints, and receipts photographed at weird angles still fail 18% of the time. We need to bring that failure rate below 5%. You'll work on the post-OCR extraction pipeline: taking raw text output (sometimes garbled) and mapping it to structured fields — merchant name, date, total, tax, line items, payment method. The challenge is handling the long tail of formats and edge cases that rule-based parsers can't cover. We use a combination of regex patterns, LLM-based extraction, and validation logic. This is a 6-month contract role. You'll work with our senior engineer who built the current pipeline and knows where all the edge cases hide. It's a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with production NLP systems that process real-world messy data.

Responsibilities

  • Improve extraction accuracy for merchant, date, total, and line item fields
  • Handle edge cases: handwritten notes, faded prints, skewed photos
  • Build validation logic to catch and flag extraction errors
  • Add support for new receipt formats as clients request them
  • Write unit tests for extraction rules and regression tests for fixed bugs
  • Document extraction patterns and edge case handling

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of OCR, text extraction, or NLP concepts
  • Familiarity with regular expressions for text parsing
  • Comfort working with messy, real-world data
  • Willingness to learn computer vision and LLM-based extraction techniques
