About the role

Solar panels produce nothing at night. Wind turbines sit idle when the air is still. Grid operators need to know exactly how much renewable energy they'll have hour-by-hour for the next 72 hours to decide which fossil fuel plants to keep on standby. A 5% improvement in renewable forecast accuracy saves millions in unnecessary backup generation costs. Our models combine numerical weather predictions, satellite-derived cloud cover, historical generation data, and real-time SCADA feeds from wind farms and solar installations. The fusion challenge is that each data source has different spatial resolution, temporal granularity, and reliability characteristics — and the optimal weighting changes with weather regime, season, and time of day. The energy forecasting team is five engineers and two meteorologists. You'll be the senior ML engineer who designs the fusion architecture and evaluation framework. Every forecast improvement has direct financial impact — our clients trade energy based on our predictions.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Design multi-source fusion models for renewable energy generation forecasting
  • Integrate numerical weather predictions with real-time SCADA data
  • Build regime-dependent weighting that adapts to weather conditions
  • Create evaluation frameworks measuring forecast value in energy trading terms
  • Optimize forecasts for different time horizons: intraday, day-ahead, week-ahead
  • Collaborate with meteorologists on weather-dependent model behavior

Requirements

  • 5+ years in time series ML with energy, weather, or geospatial focus
  • Experience with multi-source data fusion and ensemble methods
  • Strong Python, PyTorch, and distributed computing skills
  • Understanding of probabilistic forecasting and uncertainty quantification
  • Interest in renewable energy and grid operations

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible hours
  • 30 days PTO
  • Private health insurance
  • £4,000 annual conference budget
  • Direct impact on renewable energy adoption
