About the role

Reserved instances save 40-60% versus on-demand pricing, but buying the wrong reservations locks you into commitments that waste more money than they save. Our portfolio optimizer recommends the optimal mix of reserved, savings plan, and on-demand capacity based on predicted workload patterns — balancing savings against flexibility risk. The optimization model requires accurate demand forecasting (what will usage look like over the next 1-3 years?), cost modeling (how do different commitment types interact?), and risk quantification (what happens if usage drops 30% after a reservation purchase?). You'll build the forecasting and optimization pipeline that produces purchase recommendations with explicit risk-return trade-offs. This is a 6-month freelance engagement. You'll have access to 24 months of historical usage data across 30 client AWS accounts, plus real-time billing APIs. The platform team handles the recommendation UI; you focus on the math that makes the recommendations correct.

Responsibilities

  • Build demand forecasting models for cloud resource usage
  • Design portfolio optimization balancing savings against commitment risk
  • Quantify financial risk of different reservation strategies
  • Produce purchase recommendations with explicit risk-return profiles
  • Validate recommendations against actual realized savings
  • Document methodology for client transparency and knowledge transfer

Requirements

  • 5+ years in data science with optimization or financial modeling experience
  • Experience with cloud cost management and reserved instance mechanics
  • Strong statistical forecasting and portfolio optimization skills
  • Proficiency in Python for quantitative analysis
  • Understanding of AWS, GCP, or Azure pricing models
