AI Robot Swarm Communication Protocol Engineer

About the role

The coordination protocols you'll design run on fleets of twenty or more robots working a warehouse floor simultaneously, deciding in real time who takes which task without a central bottleneck making that call. Our current fleet coordination works well up to a handful of robots, but communication overhead grows fast as fleet size increases, and that's now the limiting factor on how large a deployment we can support. We need someone to design a more scalable communication protocol. You'll build and test this on our physical robot fleet on-site, iterating between simulation and the real warehouse floor rather than staying purely theoretical.

Responsibilities

  • Design a scalable communication protocol for large multi-robot fleets
  • Reduce coordination overhead as fleet size grows beyond current limits
  • Test protocol changes in both simulation and on physical robots on-site
  • Collaborate with the existing fleet coordination and task allocation team
  • Document protocol design decisions and tradeoffs

Requirements

  • Strong reinforcement learning and PyTorch experience
  • Background in multi-agent systems or distributed robotics
  • Docker experience for deployment to robot fleet hardware
  • Willingness to work on-site with physical robot testing
  • Comfort iterating between simulation and real-world validation
