AI Sanctions Screening Automation Developer

About the role

Every wire transfer, trade finance deal, and customer onboarding triggers a sanctions screening check: is this person or entity on a prohibited list? Banks screen against 200+ sanctions lists maintained by OFAC, the EU, the UN, and dozens of national authorities. The lists change daily, names have transliteration variants, and false positives from fuzzy matching overwhelm compliance teams. You'll build the matching pipeline that screens customer and counterparty names against consolidated sanctions lists. The challenge is fuzzy name matching across languages and scripts — "Mohammed Al-Rahman" might appear as "Mohammad Alrahman" or "M. Al Rahman" on different lists. You'll implement phonetic matching, transliteration normalization, and ML-based similarity scoring to catch true matches while reducing the false positive rate that currently costs our clients 2,000 analyst hours per month. The compliance automation team is four engineers. You'll start with the name normalization module, learning how sanctions lists are structured and how names vary across cultures and transliteration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build name matching pipelines for sanctions screening across languages
  • Implement phonetic matching and transliteration normalization
  • Reduce false positive rates while maintaining regulatory detection requirements
  • Integrate daily sanctions list updates from multiple authorities
  • Test matching accuracy against curated test cases and regulatory scenarios
  • Document matching rules and scoring methodology for audit purposes

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of text matching and string similarity concepts
  • Interest in multilingual text processing and NLP
  • Attention to detail for compliance-critical applications
  • Familiarity with databases and REST APIs
