AI Search Query Reformulation Engineer

About the role

The models you'll ship will handle millions of search queries every week, many of which are typed wrong, phrased ambiguously, or missing key context the user assumed was obvious. Right now, a meaningful share of those queries return zero useful results, and users just give up. You'll build the reformulation layer that sits in front of our retrieval system, rewriting weak queries into versions more likely to surface relevant results, using retrieval feedback to know when a reformulation actually helped versus made things worse. You'll own this end to end, from the FastAPI service that serves reformulations in real time to the offline evaluation harness that proves each change is actually an improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Build and serve query reformulation models via a FastAPI endpoint
  • Use retrieval feedback signals to evaluate reformulation quality
  • Fine-tune Hugging Face models on query reformulation training data
  • Reduce the zero-result-query rate through iterative improvements

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP or search relevance engineering
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation and Hugging Face tooling
  • Comfortable building and maintaining production FastAPI services
  • Familiarity with offline search evaluation methodology
