AI Second Language Writing Feedback Engineer

About the role

You'll be the fourth NLP engineer on a team of eleven, working directly with our learning science lead on a feature learners have been requesting since launch. We already give learners feedback on pronunciation and grammar in isolated exercises, but nobody gets structured feedback on longer written work — essays, journal entries, the kind of writing that shows whether someone can actually use a language, not just recognize it in a quiz. Your job is to build that feedback model: identifying not just errors, but patterns in a learner's writing over time, and turning that into feedback that actually helps rather than just marking things wrong.

Responsibilities

  • Build a model providing structured feedback on learner-submitted written work
  • Identify recurring error patterns across a learner's writing history
  • Fine-tune Hugging Face models for second-language writing assessment
  • Collaborate with the learning science team on feedback framing
  • Test feedback quality with real learner writing samples

Requirements

  • Experience with Hugging Face transformers and PyTorch
  • LangChain experience for feedback generation pipelines
  • Interest in language learning or education technology
  • Comfort working fully async with a distributed team
  • 0-2 years experience welcome
