About the role

Business teams ask the same data questions every week: "What was last month's revenue by region?" "How many support tickets are unresolved?" "Show me the top 10 customers by spend." Each question triggers a Slack message to the analytics team, who writes a SQL query, runs it, and sends back a screenshot of a chart. Our analytics bot cuts out the middleman. The bot takes natural language questions, translates them into SQL queries against the client's data warehouse, runs the query, and returns formatted results with charts — all within Slack. You'll build the query generation pipeline: parsing the question, mapping entity references to table columns, generating valid SQL, and formatting results in a way that actually answers the question. The product team is five people. You'll focus on the NLP-to-SQL layer, starting with simple aggregation queries and progressively handling joins, filters, and time comparisons. Your senior teammate built the Slack integration and charting layer; you'll feed correct query results into their presentation pipeline.

Responsibilities

  • Build natural language to SQL translation for business analytics questions
  • Map entity references in questions to database tables and columns
  • Handle query types: aggregations, filters, joins, time comparisons
  • Test query generation accuracy against curated question-answer pairs
  • Improve error handling for ambiguous or unanswerable questions
  • Document supported question patterns and limitations

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development with SQL proficiency
  • Basic understanding of NLP concepts and LLM capabilities
  • Familiarity with LangChain or similar orchestration tools
  • Experience writing analytical SQL queries
  • Interest in making data accessible to non-technical users
