About the role

Live sports commentary that sounds like a human analyst wrote it — contextually aware, statistically grounded, emotionally appropriate for the moment, and timed to what's happening on screen. That's a generation problem harder than it looks: the model needs to know what just happened, what it means in the context of the game, and what a knowledgeable fan would find interesting about it. We provide AI commentary infrastructure for sports streaming platforms covering basketball, soccer, and cricket. The commentary generation system produces text that human voice talent reads live, so it needs to be accurate, punchy, and ready 2 seconds after the play event. Our current system achieves good average quality but has a high variance problem: most commentary is fine, 15% is excellent, and 5% is embarrassingly wrong. This 8-month freelance engagement targets that 5%. You'll redesign the context injection and grounding pipeline that feeds the generation model, focusing on statistical accuracy, narrative coherence across a game session, and graceful handling of edge-case scenarios.

Responsibilities

  • Redesign context injection pipeline for statistically accurate commentary generation
  • Build narrative coherence layer tracking game story arc across a session
  • Implement factual grounding to eliminate statistically incorrect commentary
  • Handle edge case scenarios: own goals, ejections, penalty shootouts
  • Create automated quality evaluation detecting factual errors before delivery
  • Optimize generation latency to under 2 seconds from play event to text

Requirements

  • 5+ years in NLP engineering with generative text systems experience
  • Experience with LLM fine-tuning or advanced prompt engineering for factual generation
  • Strong Python skills and LangChain or equivalent orchestration experience
  • Understanding of sports statistics domains — basketball, soccer, or cricket
  • Ability to deliver in 2-week sprint cycles with clear quality metrics
