About the role

Machine-translated subtitles range from perfectly natural to hilariously wrong — and the difference is often invisible to automated quality metrics. BLEU scores can't tell you that a subtitle is grammatically correct but culturally inappropriate, or that it's technically accurate but reads at a pace no human can follow. Our QA system catches the quality issues that metrics miss. You'll build quality checks that go beyond translation accuracy: reading speed validation (characters per second must match subtitle display duration), line break optimization (subtitles shouldn't split in the middle of a phrase), timing alignment verification (subtitles must appear when the speaker starts, not 2 seconds late), and cultural sensitivity flagging for potentially inappropriate translations. The localization QA team is three engineers. You'll start with the timing and reading speed validators — objective checks that can be fully automated. As you learn the domain, you'll progress to the more subjective quality dimensions that require ML-based assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Build automated quality checks for machine-translated subtitles
  • Implement reading speed validation against display duration constraints
  • Design line break optimization for natural subtitle segmentation
  • Create timing alignment verification between audio and subtitle display
  • Flag cultural sensitivity issues in translated content
  • Test quality checks across 14 supported language pairs

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of NLP or text processing concepts
  • Interest in localization, translation, or media technology
  • Attention to detail for quality-critical applications
  • Familiarity with subtitle file formats is a plus but not required
