AI Surface Metrology Analysis Engineer

About the role

Surface roughness, waviness, and texture tell you more about manufacturing quality than any dimensional measurement. A bearing surface that looks perfect to the naked eye might have micro-scratches that cause premature failure at 10,000 RPM. Our AI metrology system analyzes surface topography data from optical profilometers, classifying surface conditions and predicting their functional impact. The technical challenge is working with 3D surface data at nanometer resolution — each measurement produces a 2048×2048 height map with sub-micron features that matter. You'll build classification models that distinguish acceptable surface variation from defect signatures, regression models that predict functional performance from surface metrics, and anomaly detectors that flag unexpected surface conditions. The quality AI team is five engineers in our Munich office. You'll work on-site 2 days per week for access to measurement equipment and work remotely the remaining 3 days. The domain is niche but fascinating — you'll develop an intuition for how nanometer-scale surface features affect macroscopic product performance.

Responsibilities

  • Build classification models for surface condition assessment from height map data
  • Develop regression models predicting functional performance from surface metrics
  • Design anomaly detection for unexpected surface conditions
  • Process and featurize high-resolution 3D surface topography data
  • Validate models against functional test results from product engineering
  • Collaborate with metrology engineers on measurement optimization

Requirements

  • 3+ years in computer vision or signal processing ML
  • Experience with 3D data, point clouds, or surface analysis
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills
  • Understanding of statistical analysis for quality applications
  • Interest in manufacturing and precision engineering domains
