AI Synthetic Dataset Evaluation Benchmarker

Savannah Watanabe

Full-time · Job · New_York

About the role

Synthetic data is only useful if it's actually similar enough to real data to train models that generalize to real-world distributions. The field has a measurement problem: most synthetic data evaluation uses metrics like Fréchet Inception Distance or simple statistical comparison that correlate poorly with downstream model utility. You can generate synthetic data that scores well on every published metric and still produces models that fail in production. We generate synthetic data for 45 enterprise clients across healthcare, finance, and e-commerce use cases. Evaluation quality is our key differentiator — we need to be able to tell clients not just 'this synthetic dataset is statistically similar to your real data' but 'models trained on this synthetic data will achieve X performance on your real-world task.' You'll build the task-specific evaluation benchmarking system: designing downstream utility evaluations that measure what actually matters, implementing comparison pipelines that run candidate synthetic datasets through real ML training scenarios, and building the benchmark suite that lets us characterize the fidelity of our generation across different data modalities and client domains.

Responsibilities

  • Design downstream utility evaluation benchmarks measuring synthetic dataset quality via actual model training outcomes
  • Build comparison pipelines running synthetic vs. real data through controlled ML training experiments
  • Implement statistical fidelity metrics beyond standard similarity measures, grounded in task-specific utility
  • Create benchmark suite covering tabular, text, and sequential synthetic data modalities
  • Develop evaluation reporting clients use to validate synthetic data before production use
  • Monitor benchmark results across generation model updates to track fidelity trends

Requirements

  • 3+ years in ML engineering or data science with synthetic data, evaluation, or benchmarking experience
  • Strong Python and statistical computing skills
  • Understanding of synthetic data generation techniques and their known failure modes
  • Experience designing controlled experiments for ML system comparison
  • Ability to communicate evaluation methodology clearly to non-technical clients

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • $3,000 annual learning budget
  • 401(k) with match
  • Equity options
