About the role

Tables in scanned documents are the bane of every document processing pipeline. A perfectly formatted PDF table becomes a jumbled mess after OCR — merged cells get split, headers lose their column alignment, and multi-line cell content gets concatenated with the row below. Our table extraction system reconstructs table structure from document images, delivering clean tabular data that downstream systems can actually use. We process 3 million document pages per month, and roughly 20% contain tables that matter — financial statements, lab results, insurance claims, shipping manifests. The current extraction pipeline handles simple grid tables well (91% cell accuracy) but struggles with complex tables: nested headers, spanning cells, borderless layouts, and tables that wrap across pages. The document AI team is six engineers. You'll own the table detection and structure recognition module, working between the OCR team that provides page-level text and the field extraction team that consumes your structured table output.

Responsibilities

  • Improve table structure recognition for complex layouts: nested headers, spanning cells
  • Build cell-level extraction with accurate row-column assignment
  • Handle multi-page table continuation and borderless table detection
  • Design evaluation metrics tracking cell-level extraction accuracy
  • Optimize the table pipeline for throughput at 3M pages per month
  • Collaborate with OCR and field extraction teams on end-to-end quality

Requirements

  • 5+ years in computer vision or document understanding
  • Experience with table detection, layout analysis, or document structure recognition
  • Strong PyTorch skills for model development
  • Understanding of document image processing challenges: noise, skew, resolution
  • Ability to design evaluation frameworks for structured extraction tasks
