AI Truthfulness Evaluation Researcher

Aria Watanabe

Full-time · Job · San_Francisco

About the role

LLMs hallucinate. The research community knows this. What is not yet solved is how to measure it rigorously and at scale: which kinds of questions trigger hallucinations, at what rate, with what severity, and whether truthfulness properties generalize or are domain-specific. TruthfulQA and related benchmarks measure a slice of this. They don't capture the full texture of truthfulness failure modes: confident confabulation, hedged falsehood, technically-true but misleading statements, or the difference between a model that doesn't know something and one that generates a plausible-sounding falsehood. We do fundamental AI safety and evaluation research. Truthfulness evaluation is one of our three core research priorities: not building benchmarks that models overfit to, but developing evaluation methodology that provides a persistent signal about a model's actual propensity to generate false or misleading statements. The goal is evaluation methodology that remains valid as capabilities improve. This is a research role. You'll design evaluation frameworks, build evaluation datasets, run model evaluations, and write up findings for the research community. The primary output is published evaluation methodology and open-sourced evaluation infrastructure, not production systems. We expect you to identify the limitations of existing approaches, propose improvements, and validate them empirically.

Responsibilities

  • Design truthfulness evaluation methodology capturing hallucination, confabulation, and misleading statement failure modes
  • Build evaluation datasets spanning factual, inferential, and belief-attribution truthfulness assessment
  • Develop automated evaluation pipelines running model assessments at scale with human calibration
  • Investigate domain specificity: whether truthfulness generalizes across topics or is narrowly calibrated
  • Publish evaluation methodology and open-source infrastructure for community adoption
  • Engage with the AI safety and NLP research community on evaluation standard development

Requirements

  • 6+ years in NLP research or AI evaluation with LLM evaluation, calibration, or safety research experience
  • Deep expertise in language model behavior analysis, hallucination characterization, and benchmark design
  • Strong Python and statistical analysis skills with large-scale evaluation infrastructure development
  • Research track record with peer-reviewed publications in NLP, AI safety, or LLM evaluation
  • Ability to identify the limitations in existing evaluation approaches and propose principled improvements

Benefits

  • Hybrid: 3 days SF office, 2 days remote
  • Top-of-market compensation for AI safety research expertise
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • Significant research conference and publication budget
  • Equity participation
