About the role

Voice activity detection sounds like a solved problem until you encounter a construction site, a busy café, or a car with the windows down at highway speed. Our VAD model runs on 15 million devices across mobile and IoT platforms, and it needs to distinguish speech from background noise in conditions that would make most audio engineers cry. The challenge isn't just accuracy — it's the constraint envelope. Our model must run in under 2ms per frame on a mobile CPU, use less than 4MB of memory, and achieve less than 3% false rejection rate across 47 languages. Current performance is close but not there: we're at 4.1% false rejection on the hardest noise profiles, and that gap blocks a major OEM partnership. You'll focus on closing that gap through model architecture improvements, training data augmentation, and noise-robust feature engineering. The audio ML team is five engineers; you'll work alongside the speech recognition team who depends on your VAD output as their first processing stage.

Responsibilities

  • Improve VAD accuracy on challenging noise conditions while meeting latency constraints
  • Design noise-robust features and data augmentation strategies
  • Optimize model architecture for mobile and edge deployment
  • Build evaluation pipelines covering 47 languages and diverse acoustic conditions
  • Collaborate with the speech recognition team on end-to-end quality metrics
  • Profile and optimize inference performance on target hardware

Requirements

  • 5+ years in audio/speech ML with production deployment experience
  • Experience with real-time audio processing and signal-level features
  • Strong PyTorch or TensorFlow skills for model development
  • Understanding of model compression for edge deployment
  • Familiarity with audio evaluation metrics and benchmark design
