AI Weld Inspection Computer Vision Developer

Olivia Wang

Full-time · Job · Berlin

About the role

A structural weld failure in a pressure vessel, bridge, or pipeline can be catastrophic. Traditional inspection requires certified radiographers to interpret X-ray images — a manual process that takes hours and depends heavily on the inspector's experience and fatigue level. Our automated weld inspection system classifies weld defects from radiographic images with sensitivity exceeding human inspectors. The defect taxonomy is specific and demanding: porosity, slag inclusions, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, cracks, and undercut — each with severity grades defined by welding codes like AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX. You'll build the detection and classification models that identify these defects, estimate their dimensions, and determine whether they exceed code-specified acceptance criteria. You'll work 2 days per week at our Munich inspection lab where we have calibrated radiographic imaging equipment and a library of 80,000 annotated weld radiographs. The NDT (non-destructive testing) team is six engineers; you'll be the senior ML engineer who drives the detection architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Build defect detection and classification models for weld radiographic images
  • Estimate defect dimensions for code compliance assessment
  • Train models against welding code acceptance criteria: AWS D1.1, ASME IX
  • Design evaluation frameworks validated by certified welding inspectors
  • Handle diverse radiographic imaging conditions and material types
  • Maintain detection sensitivity exceeding human inspector benchmarks

Requirements

  • 5+ years in computer vision with defect detection or medical imaging
  • Experience with fine-grained classification under strict accuracy requirements
  • Strong PyTorch skills for model development
  • Understanding of quality inspection workflows and certification standards
  • Comfort with lab environments and industrial imaging equipment

Benefits

  • Hybrid — 2 days Munich lab, 3 days remote
  • 30 days PTO
  • €3,000 home office budget
  • Annual conference attendance
  • Work on safety-critical inspection that protects lives
