AI Zero-Result Query Recovery Engineer

About the role

We just crossed 40 million monthly searches and zero-result queries are climbing fast. Every search that returns nothing is a user who leaves, and right now roughly one in twelve queries hits a dead end. We need someone to build the recovery layer before that number gets worse. You'll design a system that catches zero-result and low-confidence queries, rewrites or expands them using retrieval-augmented techniques, and routes users to the closest useful result instead of an empty page. This sits directly on top of our existing semantic search stack. We're a lean team shipping weekly. There's no committee to approve your approach — you'll prototype against production query logs, measure recovery rate, and ship what works.

Responsibilities

  • Build query rewriting and expansion logic for zero-result and low-confidence searches
  • Design retrieval fallback paths using our existing embedding index
  • Measure recovery rate and iterate weekly against live query logs
  • Work with the search relevance engineer to avoid regressions elsewhere
  • Ship incremental fixes without waiting on a formal release cycle

Requirements

  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation or semantic search systems
  • Comfortable working with LangChain or a comparable orchestration framework
  • SQL fluency for analyzing query logs at scale
  • Has shipped a search or recommendation feature that measurably reduced drop-off
