Computer Vision Engineer - Retail Shelf Monitoring

Kenji Nakamura

Full-time · Mid-level · Chicago

About the role

We install camera-based shelf monitoring in convenience and grocery environments where lighting is bad, fixtures change often, and labels are not consistent. This role focuses on improving detection quality in conditions that are awkward rather than glamorous. You would work with real deployment constraints, not benchmark-only datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Improve shelf object detection and out-of-stock recognition
  • Analyse failure cases caused by glare, occlusion, and packaging changes
  • Work with product and field teams to prioritise impactful model improvements
  • Build evaluation workflows tied to operational metrics
  • Help maintain data pipelines for new store environments

Requirements

  • 4+ years in computer vision or applied perception systems
  • Python and NumPy for data work and analysis
  • PyTorch for detection and classification model development
  • Computer Vision fundamentals including calibration and error analysis
  • Docker for reproducible local and deployment environments
  • Experience handling edge constraints or noisy image pipelines

Benefits

  • $122,000 - $146,000 base salary
  • Hybrid in Austin with flexible remote days
  • Equity grant and annual bonus
  • Access to real pilot environments
  • A practical CV problem with direct customer value
