Computer Vision Research Engineer - Defect Detection

Tom Weston

Full-time · Mid-level · Toronto

About the role

A precision manufacturing group is upgrading its visual inspection systems across three plants. The defects are subtle, the lighting is inconsistent, and false positives create real production cost. We need a research engineer who can turn plant-floor feedback into measurable model improvements without drifting into academic abstraction.

Responsibilities

  • Improve defect detection performance across multiple production lines
  • Analyse false-positive and false-negative patterns with plant teams
  • Design data collection and labelling strategies for new defects
  • Support deployment decisions with clear performance trade-offs
  • Document results in a way operations managers can actually use

Requirements

  • 5+ years in computer vision or industrial perception
  • Python for data processing and experiment tooling
  • PyTorch for detection, segmentation, or anomaly modelling
  • Computer Vision experience with inspection or localisation tasks
  • NumPy for image transformations and analysis
  • Docker for reproducible experimentation and deployment

Benefits

  • $134,000 - $156,000 base salary
  • Hybrid in Toronto with regular factory visits
  • Bonus tied to plant performance improvements
  • Strong pension and extended health coverage
  • A technically serious environment with practical outcomes
