Junior AI API Observability Developer

About the role

We process 400 million API calls per day across our platform, and when something goes wrong — a latency spike, an unexpected error rate, a model returning garbage — the teams responsible need to know within 90 seconds, not 9 minutes. Our observability layer collects the telemetry. The gap is in the alerting and dashboards that turn telemetry into action. This is a 6-month contract role focused on shipping observability improvements that our API platform team has had on the backlog for months. You'll build new alerting rules for anomalous API behavior, improve the dashboards that on-call engineers use during incidents, and add structured logging to API endpoints that currently emit unstructured text. You'll pair with a senior SRE who will guide you through the existing infrastructure and explain the failure modes you're monitoring for. This is a great opportunity for a junior developer to get real production observability experience on a platform operating at significant scale.

Responsibilities

  • Implement alerting rules for API latency, error rate, and throughput anomalies
  • Improve on-call dashboards with clearer signal and reduced noise
  • Add structured logging to API endpoints that currently emit unstructured text
  • Build synthetic canary probes that continuously test critical API endpoints
  • Document alerting runbooks for the on-call rotation
  • Fix existing observability gaps reported by the engineering team

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of APIs, HTTP, and logging concepts
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools or dashboards (any platform)
  • Interest in DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering
  • Reliable and communicative remote work habits
