Junior AI Back-Translation Quality Validation Developer

About the role

Back-translation is the quality verification technique of translating a translated text back to the source language and comparing the result to the original — a perfect translation should round-trip without significant semantic loss. It's widely used to detect translation quality failures, particularly for machine translation of technical content where terminology errors, omissions, and meaning reversals are the failure modes that matter most. We run translation pipelines for 160 brands and technical documentation publishers. Back-translation quality validation is a scalable quality signal we're adding to our pipeline as a complement to our human review process. The challenge is that back-translation accuracy doesn't perfectly correlate with translation quality — a fluent but imprecise translation can back-translate well while missing key nuance — so back-translation needs to be weighted alongside other quality signals rather than used alone. As a junior developer, you'll build the back-translation pipeline and quality signal computation. Senior NLP engineers design the weighting model. Your work: calling translation APIs for back-translation, computing semantic similarity between original and back-translated text, and integrating the back-translation signal into the quality dashboard that localization managers use to prioritize human review effort.

Responsibilities

  • Build back-translation pipeline calling translation APIs to round-trip translated content to source language
  • Implement semantic similarity computation comparing original source and back-translated text
  • Develop quality signal computation normalizing back-translation scores by language pair and content domain
  • Create pipeline scheduling integrating back-translation validation into existing translation workflow stages
  • Build quality dashboard integration surfacing back-translation scores alongside other quality signals
  • Maintain pipeline as new language pairs and translation API providers are added

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with translation APIs or NLP text similarity concepts
  • Interest in localization, multilingual NLP, or content quality automation
  • Attention to pipeline accuracy and API error handling
  • Good communication for collaborating with senior engineers and localization managers
