About the role

We process 4 petabytes per month across our clients' data lakes, and the query costs that land on their AWS bills every month are rarely what anyone expected. A data scientist runs an unoptimized query across 3 years of raw event logs and uses $800 of Athena compute in 4 minutes. A scheduled pipeline stops using partition pruning after a schema change and triples its cost overnight. Nobody notices until the bill arrives. This is a 6-month contract to build the cost monitoring layer that catches these situations proactively. You'll instrument query logs, build cost attribution by team and use case, create alerting for unusual spend patterns, and produce the weekly cost reports that platform teams use to prioritize optimization work. The senior infrastructure engineers will guide the technical approach; your job is to build the monitoring infrastructure and keep it running. If you're a junior developer who wants to learn data platform engineering from the inside — understanding how petabyte-scale data lakes actually work and how real engineering teams manage their costs — this is a direct window into that world.

Fully remote.
