About the role

We're a 30-person company building AI tools for local government agencies — permit processing, public records search, and citizen inquiry routing. Nothing glamorous, but our tools save municipal employees hours of manual work every day, and that matters. You'll join as our second junior developer, working alongside a team of 4 engineers. Your initial focus will be building and testing LLM-powered classification systems for incoming citizen requests. You'll also help maintain our FastAPI backend and write integration tests for new features. We move at a steady pace, we document everything, and we believe junior engineers should understand why they're building something, not just how. Responsibilities

  • Build LLM-powered classification systems for citizen request routing
  • Write and maintain integration tests for backend features
  • Assist with FastAPI endpoint development and API documentation
  • Participate in weekly architecture discussions and sprint planning
  • Learn and apply prompt engineering techniques for production use cases

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Python and basic SQL
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and web frameworks
  • Exposure to OpenAI API or similar LLM tools (coursework or personal projects count)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Good written communication
