Junior AI Glacial Melt Velocity Tracking Developer

Aaron Eriksson

Contract · Job · London

About the role

Glacial melt is one of the most directly measurable consequences of climate change and one of the most important inputs to sea level rise projections. Tracking melt velocity — how fast glaciers are losing mass and receding — requires processing multitemporal satellite imagery to detect surface changes over time. The science is clear on what to measure; the engineering challenge is building a pipeline that processes petabytes of archival and current satellite imagery reliably and delivers consistent melt velocity time series for the glaciers scientists and policy makers care about most. We build climate data infrastructure for 18 research institutions and government agencies. Glacial melt velocity tracking is a new data product we're building for a consortium of polar research organizations. The ML components are partially designed; this is a 9-month contract to build the data pipeline that processes Sentinel-1 and Landsat imagery, computes surface velocity estimates, and delivers the time series database that researchers query for their studies. Senior earth observation engineers define the processing methodology. You build the reliable pipeline that executes it on schedule across the global glacier inventory.

Responsibilities

  • Build satellite imagery ingestion pipeline for Sentinel-1 and Landsat glacial coverage
  • Implement surface change detection processing multi-temporal image pairs for velocity estimation
  • Create glacial melt velocity time series database with regular update cadence
  • Develop data quality flags identifying cloudy, corrupted, or low-confidence velocity estimates
  • Build automated pipeline scheduling and monitoring for global glacier inventory coverage
  • Create researcher query interface for velocity time series retrieval by glacier and date range

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with data pipelines and geospatial or satellite data preferred
  • Interest in climate science, remote sensing, or environmental data
  • Attention to data quality and pipeline reliability for research use cases
  • Reliable async communication for a contract engagement

Benefits

  • Fully remote contract across EU time zones — 9-month engagement
  • Flexible schedule
  • Competitive contract rate
  • Mentorship from senior earth observation engineers
  • Contribution to climate research data infrastructure
