Junior AI KPI Anomaly Explanation Developer

Matthew Rodriguez

Full-time · Job · Chicago

About the role

An alert that says 'revenue is down 18% week over week' is less useful than one that says 'revenue is down 18% week over week, driven primarily by a 34% drop in enterprise deals closed in the Western region, which correlates with the Salesforce outage on Tuesday.' The first tells a business leader there's a problem. The second tells them where to look. Our BI platform serves 300 mid-market companies with embedded analytics and intelligent alerting. KPI anomaly explanation — automatically decomposing detected anomalies into their contributing factors — is the feature that turns our anomaly detection from noise generator to decision support tool. As a junior developer, you'll help build the explanation pipeline. Senior engineers define the decomposition methodology and statistical approach. You'll implement the data aggregation pipelines that pull the dimensional breakdowns needed for anomaly decomposition, build the natural language explanation generation that turns decomposition results into readable narratives, and maintain the pipeline as clients add new KPIs and data sources. The output lands directly in the dashboard alerts that business leaders read every morning.

Responsibilities

  • Build dimensional breakdown pipelines aggregating KPI data by segment, region, product, and time period
  • Implement contribution attribution logic identifying which dimensions explain a detected anomaly
  • Develop natural language explanation generation producing readable anomaly narratives from decomposition results
  • Create explanation confidence scoring flagging cases where decomposition is uncertain
  • Maintain pipeline as clients add new KPIs and dimensional breakdowns
  • Monitor explanation quality using business stakeholder feedback ratings

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with data aggregation and business metrics concepts
  • Interest in business intelligence, analytics, or decision support products
  • Attention to clarity and accuracy in natural language output
  • Good communication skills for collaborating with BI product managers

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Health and dental insurance
  • $1,500 annual learning budget
  • Mentorship from senior BI engineers
  • 401(k) with match
