Junior AI Legal Research Automation Developer

About the role

Legal research has a well-known efficiency problem: junior associates at law firms spend 40-60% of their billable hours finding and summarizing cases. Our platform automates the retrieval and preliminary synthesis, generating structured research memos from natural language questions in minutes instead of hours. The attorneys review and refine the output; they don't start from a blank page. You'll be the second junior developer on the research automation team. Your primary responsibility is building and maintaining the data pipelines that keep our legal corpus up to date: ingesting new case law from Westlaw and Lexis feeds, running metadata extraction to tag decisions by jurisdiction, practice area, and precedential weight, and keeping the vector index synchronized as new documents arrive daily. No legal background required. Our attorneys will explain the domain as you go. What you need is solid Python fundamentals, curiosity about how LLM-based applications work, and the discipline to maintain data pipelines that legal professionals depend on every day.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain ingestion pipelines for case law and regulatory documents
  • Implement metadata extraction for jurisdiction, practice area, and citation tagging
  • Keep vector indexes synchronized with daily corpus updates
  • Write data validation checks to catch ingestion errors before they reach production
  • Monitor pipeline health and respond to failures during business hours
  • Document pipeline architecture for engineering and legal teams

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic understanding of data pipelines and SQL
  • Familiarity with API integrations and JSON data formats
  • Attention to data quality and systematic debugging approach
  • Interest in legal technology or NLP applications
