Junior AI Research Trend Visualization Developer

Julian Johansson

Freelance · Job · London

About the role

Research institutions and R&D departments want to understand where a field is heading before the trend is obvious to everyone. Our platform analyzes publication networks, citation growth, and funding announcements to surface emerging research directions early — but the interface for exploring these trends is lagging significantly behind the analytical capability. This is a part-time freelance role — 20-25 hours per week — helping build the trend visualization layer. You'll build the data pipelines feeding visualization components, implement the chart types that make research trend data legible to research directors who aren't data scientists, and create the interactive filtering that lets users explore trends by field, institution, geography, and time period. Senior engineers own the underlying trend detection analytics. Your focus is the visualization layer that makes those analytics accessible. If you're a junior developer interested in research intelligence, science communication, or data visualization, this is a role where you'll produce work that's directly seen and evaluated by research leadership at universities and R&D organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Build data pipelines feeding research trend metrics into visualization components
  • Implement interactive charts for publication volume trends, citation growth, and funding flow
  • Create filtering and exploration interfaces for trend discovery by field and institution
  • Develop export functionality for trend reports used in grant applications and strategy documents
  • Build trend alert system notifying users of significant changes in their tracked research areas
  • Ensure visualization accessibility and readability for non-technical research leadership audiences

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Plotly, or similar)
  • Interest in research intelligence, science communication, or data visualization
  • Good aesthetic judgment for presenting data to non-technical audiences
  • Reliable async communication for a remote freelance engagement

Benefits

  • Fully remote freelance — 20-25 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule across UK/EU time zones
  • Competitive hourly rate
  • Exposure to research institution clients across academia and R&D
  • Portfolio work with direct visibility to institutional clients
