Junior AI Sports Clip Captioning Developer

About the role

Every sports highlight clip needs a caption for social distribution. Right now, our platform's producers write these manually — which at 800 clips per day is unsustainable and creates a publishing bottleneck. A clip from a basketball game showing a fourth-quarter three-pointer to tie the game needs a caption that captures the game situation, the player, the significance, and the emotional register. That's not trivial to automate, but it's tractable. This is a freelance role, 20-25 hours per week, building the sports clip auto-captioning pipeline. You'll integrate clip metadata (game state, player identification from existing systems, event type), build the caption generation prompts, implement the caption length and style constraints for different platforms (Twitter vs. Instagram vs. YouTube), and create the review queue where producers approve or edit generated captions before publishing. Senior engineers own the video analysis and player detection. You own the text layer: prompt design, output formatting, platform-specific style adaptation, and the producer review interface. If you want to work on a product that ships hundreds of pieces of content per day and see your work published immediately, this is about as direct as it gets.

Responsibilities

  • Build caption generation pipeline using clip metadata: game state, player, event type, score context
  • Design prompt strategy producing captions at appropriate length and tone for each distribution platform
  • Implement platform-specific caption formatting for Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Create producer review queue for caption approval and editing before publication
  • Build caption performance tracking monitoring engagement by caption style
  • Maintain caption generation quality as new sports, leagues, and event types are added

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic familiarity with LLM APIs and prompt design
  • Interest in sports media, content production, or social distribution
  • Attention to tone and style accuracy in caption output
  • Reliable async communication for a freelance engagement
