About the role

Mixing two tracks requires that their tempos align. Syncing a musical track to video requires that beat positions match edit points and scene transitions. Automating these tasks at scale — for a platform generating thousands of music-video sync placements per day — requires robust tempo extraction and beat grid alignment that works across diverse genres, from classical piano to trap beats to live jazz. We build AI-powered music production and licensing tools for 3,500 artists, editors, and music supervisors. Tempo and beat alignment automation is a high-frequency workflow: our clients need tracks that fit specific durations, transitions that feel musically natural, and mixes where the BPM of adjacent tracks relates musically. This is a freelance role — 20-25 hours per week — helping build and improve the tempo and beat alignment system. You'll work on beat detection model evaluation, implement time-stretching integrations for duration-matched export, and build the accuracy monitoring that tracks alignment quality across genre categories. Senior audio ML engineers own the core algorithms; you help build the evaluation infrastructure and production integrations that make them usable at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Build beat detection accuracy evaluation pipeline across genre categories and tempo ranges
  • Implement time-stretching integrations for duration-matched track export
  • Develop tempo consistency monitoring detecting drift in beat grid estimates across track segments
  • Create beat alignment accuracy metrics comparing detected grids against manually annotated ground truth
  • Build genre-stratified evaluation reports identifying model weaknesses by musical category
  • Maintain pipeline as new audio processing integrations and export formats are added

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic familiarity with audio processing concepts or music theory helpful but not required
  • Interest in music technology, audio processing, or creative AI tools
  • Attention to quantitative accuracy in audio evaluation metrics
  • Reliable async communication for a freelance engagement
