About the role

Vendor statement reconciliation is the accounts payable task of matching what a vendor says you owe them against what your own records show you owe. Discrepancies are common: duplicate invoices, missed credits, price renegotiations not reflected in the statement, and timing differences between vendor and buyer records. Manually reconciling a single vendor statement with 400 line items can take an AP specialist half a day. We process 40,000 financial documents monthly. Vendor statement reconciliation is the next workflow we're automating. The technical components are: extracting line items from vendor statement PDFs, matching them against purchase order and payment records, classifying discrepancies by type, and generating the exception report that AP teams review and action. As a junior developer, you'll help build the matching and reconciliation pipeline. Senior engineers handle the document extraction; you'll implement the line item matching logic, the discrepancy classification rules, and the exception report generation that AP specialists review. This is a role where your work touches real financial workflows at scale and the accuracy of your matching logic has a direct operational impact.

Responsibilities

  • Build line item matching logic connecting vendor statement entries to internal PO and payment records
  • Implement discrepancy classification distinguishing duplicate invoices, missed credits, price mismatches, and timing gaps
  • Create exception report generation producing AP-team-ready reconciliation summaries
  • Develop match confidence scoring routing low-confidence matches for human review
  • Build reconciliation audit trail documenting each match decision for AP record-keeping
  • Maintain matching pipeline as new vendor statement formats and document layouts are encountered

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python and SQL development experience
  • Basic familiarity with data matching, financial records, or accounts payable concepts
  • Interest in finance automation, document processing, or enterprise workflow software
  • Attention to accuracy and precision in financial data matching
  • Good communication for collaborating with AP specialists on exception review processes
