NLP Research Engineer

About the role

Somewhere between pure research and pure engineering, there's a sweet spot where reading papers on Monday leads to shipping code on Friday. That's this role. We build NLP tools for the legal industry — contract analysis, clause extraction, and risk scoring — and our models need to be both state-of-the-art and production-reliable. You'll split your time between experimenting with new architectures (mostly transformer variants for long-document understanding) and hardening successful experiments into production-grade components. Our current stack is Hugging Face for training, LangChain for orchestration, and RAG for knowledge retrieval. The team is 5 engineers and 2 legal domain experts. We work hybrid from our NYC office (3 days/week) because whiteboard sessions with the legal team matter — nuance in contract language doesn't translate well over Slack.

Responsibilities

  • Research and prototype new NLP architectures for long-document understanding
  • Fine-tune transformer models on proprietary legal corpora
  • Harden successful research prototypes into production components
  • Collaborate with legal domain experts on annotation and evaluation
  • You'll spend most of your time iterating between experimentation and deployment

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP with both research and engineering experience
  • Strong PyTorch and Hugging Face skills
  • Experience with RAG architectures and LangChain
  • Familiarity with academic NLP literature and implementation
  • Bonus: experience with legal or regulatory text
