About the role

A text-to-speech system that sounds American English doesn't serve a user in Mumbai who expects Indian English prosody, or a user in Lagos who expects Nigerian English cadence. Generic "neutral" accents feel robotic to everyone outside Silicon Valley. Our accent-adaptive TTS generates natural speech in 12 English accent varieties and 6 non-English languages, each with authentic prosody, rhythm, and intonation patterns. The research challenge is disentangling content from style in the latent space — allowing the same text to be rendered in any accent while maintaining speaker identity and emotional tone. You'll advance our multi-accent architecture, improve naturalness on underrepresented accents where training data is scarce, and build the accent interpolation system that lets product teams create custom voice personalities. The voice synthesis team is six engineers. You'll be the senior researcher-engineer driving accent modeling, working alongside audio engineers who handle vocoder quality and product managers who define accent priorities based on market demand.

Responsibilities

  • Advance multi-accent TTS architecture for 12+ English accent varieties
  • Improve naturalness on underrepresented accents with limited training data
  • Build accent interpolation for custom voice personality creation
  • Design evaluation frameworks using native speaker preference testing
  • Optimize synthesis quality while maintaining real-time inference speed
  • Set research direction for accent and prosody modeling

Requirements

  • 6+ years in speech synthesis or audio ML with production experience
  • Deep understanding of TTS architectures: Tacotron, VITS, or similar
  • Experience with multi-speaker and multi-style voice modeling
  • Strong PyTorch skills for model development
  • Familiarity with phonetics, prosody, and cross-linguistic speech patterns
