About the role

Personalization engines are powerful. Too powerful, sometimes. When a recommendation system learns that showing certain content at certain times increases engagement by 40%, is that good product design or manipulation? Our clients — media companies, e-commerce platforms, social apps — need someone to draw that line before regulators draw it for them. You'll audit our clients' personalization and recommendation systems for manipulative patterns: dark patterns in UI, addictive engagement loops, exploitation of cognitive biases, and discriminatory content filtering. For each finding, you'll produce actionable recommendations: specific model constraints, UI changes, or policy guardrails that reduce harm without destroying the business metric the system was built to optimize. This is a 10-month contract. You'll work with our product ethics team of three, embedded across 4-6 client engagements simultaneously. Each engagement produces a published audit report that becomes part of the client's regulatory compliance documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Audit personalization and recommendation systems for manipulative patterns
  • Identify dark patterns, addictive loops, and discriminatory filtering
  • Produce actionable remediation recommendations with business impact analysis
  • Write audit reports suitable for regulatory compliance documentation
  • Develop evaluation frameworks for measuring manipulation risk
  • Advise clients on ethical AI product design practices

Requirements

  • 5+ years in AI ethics, product management, or data science with ethics focus
  • Deep understanding of recommendation systems and behavioral design
  • Strong analytical skills with Python and SQL for data investigation
  • Excellent technical writing for audit reports and recommendations
  • Familiarity with emerging AI regulations: EU AI Act, DSA, FTC guidance
